KATHMANDU — A Turkish Airlines aircraft arriving from Istanbul caught fire while landing at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu on Monday morning, prompting emergency response measures and a temporary runway closure.

According to airport security officials, the incident involved Turkish Airlines flight TK726, which had arrived from Istanbul. The fire reportedly broke out in the aircraft’s tire during landing, triggering an immediate emergency response at Nepal’s only international airport.

Speaking to media, airport security office Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajkumar Silwal said the fire was quickly brought under control with the assistance of airport fire engines.

“The tire caught fire during landing this morning. The blaze was extinguished with the help of fire services, and the situation is now normal. The runway has been temporarily closed for inspection,” Silwal said.

Authorities confirmed that the aircraft was carrying 273 passengers and 11 crew members at the time of the incident. All passengers were safely evacuated, and no casualties or injuries have been reported so far.

Airport officials said technical inspections are currently underway to determine the exact cause of the tire fire and assess any potential damage to the aircraft. The temporary suspension of runway operations was implemented as a precautionary measure to ensure operational safety.

The incident briefly disrupted flight operations at Tribhuvan International Airport, a critical aviation hub connecting Nepal to global destinations, including Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Aviation authorities are expected to provide further updates after completing the technical assessment.
