KATHMANDU – The Government of Nepal has announced a sweeping restructuring of public institutions, including the abolition of 31 government bodies, merger of 6 entities, and transfer of 6 others as part of a broader administrative reform agenda.
Presenting the national budget for the fiscal year 2083/84 in the Federal Parliament on Friday, Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle said the government is moving to streamline the country’s bureaucratic structure to make it more efficient, cost-effective, and performance-oriented.
He stated that the decision includes the scrapping of 31 institutions, merging of 6 organizations, transfer of 6 entities, and restructuring of 18 bodies under a comprehensive administrative reform plan.
According to the Finance Minister, the existing institutional framework has become unnecessarily heavy and complex, creating inefficiencies in service delivery and increasing fiscal pressure on the state.
“The government is committed to making the organizational structure lean and efficient,” Wagle said while unveiling the budget proposal.
The announcement signals one of the most significant public sector restructuring initiatives in recent years, aimed at reducing duplication of roles, cutting administrative costs, and improving governance efficiency.
Officials suggest that the restructuring will focus on eliminating overlapping mandates among government agencies and consolidating similar functions under unified administrative structures.
Policy observers view the move as part of a broader fiscal discipline strategy, as Nepal seeks to optimize public expenditure amid rising development and operational costs. The reform is also expected to improve coordination among government agencies and enhance accountability in public service delivery.
Further implementation details, including which specific institutions will be affected, are expected to be outlined in subsequent government notifications and sectoral restructuring guidelines.
