KATHMANDU: Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has announced that the government will install AI-enabled CCTV cameras along border areas in the upcoming fiscal year as part of efforts to curb revenue leakages and strengthen governance.
Responding to lawmakers’ concerns raised in the House of Representatives regarding allegations of police personnel demanding money during vehicle checks, the Home Minister said the government has made anti-corruption and good governance a core priority.
He said central and provincial police leadership have been instructed to closely monitor subordinate staff and strictly implement a system of performance-based rewards and punishment.
The minister said the government will deploy advanced surveillance systems equipped with artificial intelligence at border points to improve monitoring and control illegal activities, including revenue leakage.
“We are not only procuring CCTV cameras with AI technology at border areas next year; we are working to plug the loopholes through which citizens’ trust and state revenue leak,” Gurung said in Parliament.
He added that the initiative is aimed at strengthening border security and improving real-time monitoring of cross-border movement.
The government has also allocated funds to establish a central command system within the Ministry of Home Affairs to integrate monitoring of all security agencies across the country.
The system will enable real-time surveillance and advanced data analysis to enhance coordination among security bodies at both federal and border levels.
Home Minister Gurung said the government’s policy is to promote officers who perform their duties effectively while taking strict action against those with poor performance.
He expressed confidence that the new measures will help institutionalize administrative discipline and strengthen public trust in security agencies.
The budget also includes additional allocations aimed at boosting the morale of security personnel and improving operational effectiveness across law enforcement agencies.
