Buddha Air to introduce ATR 72-600 aircraft in Nepal, Marking a major milestone in domestic aviation

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s leading private airline Buddha Air is preparing to introduce the next-generation ATR 72-600 aircraft as part of its fleet expansion and modernization strategy, potentially setting a new benchmark for technology, safety and operational efficiency in Nepal’s domestic aviation sector.

The airline, which currently operates ATR 72-500 and ATR 42-320 series aircraft, is set to add the newer ATR 72-600 series to its fleet. The company said the new aircraft will bring significant improvements in passenger services, flight safety, operational efficiency and environmental performance.

Buddha Air Sales Director Rupesh Joshi said the airline currently plans to bring two ATR 72-600 aircraft into operation.

According to Joshi, the first aircraft is scheduled to land in Kathmandu this Friday, while the second is expected to arrive within a month.

“One of our existing ATR 72-500 aircraft has already been phased out, while another is expected to be phased out within a year,” Joshi said. “As three aircraft from the older ATR series are expected to be phased out over the next two years, we have decided to introduce the newer generation of ATR aircraft with the future in mind.”

Buddha Air currently operates one ATR 42 and 14 ATR 72 series aircraft. The airline plans to initially expand its fleet with two ATR 72-600 aircraft and gradually replace its older aircraft.

The new aircraft will be brought to Nepal from Europe and South America. With the introduction of the ATR 72-600, Buddha Air is expected to become the first private airline in Nepal to operate the newer ATR 600 series.

Pilots undergoing simulator training

As the ATR 72-600 incorporates more advanced technology than the aircraft currently operated by the airline, Buddha Air has already begun preparing its pilots for the transition.

Joshi said pilots have been sent to Bangkok and Toulouse for simulator training on the new aircraft.

After returning to Nepal, the pilots will undergo an additional 20 hours of training with foreign instructor pilots before being cleared to operate regular commercial flights, according to the company.

The phased fleet renewal is expected to strengthen Buddha Air’s operational capacity while improving the reliability and efficiency of its domestic network.

How ATR 72-600 differs from ATR 72-500

At first glance, the ATR 72-500 and ATR 72-600 may appear similar in terms of their exterior design, but the major differences lie in the aircraft’s technology and avionics.

The ATR 72-600 is regarded as a new-generation turboprop aircraft developed specifically for regional aviation. It features a fully digital glass cockpit, replacing traditional analogue instruments with advanced digital displays.

The integrated cockpit system provides pilots with critical flight information through a centralized digital interface.
