Gwarko flyover nears completion, set to ease Kathmandu traffic by mid-June

KATHMANDU: The long-awaited Gwarko flyover in Lalitpur is on track for completion by mid-June 2025, announced Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Devendra Dahal during an inspection of the project site on Sunday morning. The NPR 176 million project, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in the Kathmandu Valley, is now in its final stages after facing delays.

Minister Dahal emphasized that no further setbacks will be tolerated, stating, “Barring unforeseen circumstances, the flyover will be operational for vehicles by mid-June.” The project, initially slated for completion by February 23, 2024, encountered technical challenges that pushed back the timeline. Keshab Kumar Sharma, Secretary at the Ministry, confirmed that these issues have been resolved, paving the way for timely completion.

Ramhari Pokharel, Director General of the Department of Roads, underscored the flyover’s importance for improving traffic flow in the densely populated Kathmandu Valley. “This project is a critical step toward better traffic management,” he said, highlighting its potential to reduce bottlenecks at the busy Gwarko intersection.

According to the Department of Roads, major construction work on the flyover has been completed, with only finishing touches remaining. The project, funded at NPR 176 million, is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and reduce travel time for commuters in Lalitpur and surrounding areas. The flyover is part of broader efforts to modernize infrastructure in the Kathmandu Valley, where rapid urbanization has strained existing road networks.

As the mid-June deadline approaches, the government is optimistic about delivering the project on time, offering relief to commuters grappling with daily traffic woes. The completion of the Gwarko flyover marks a significant milestone in Nepal’s infrastructure development, with hopes of setting a precedent for timely execution of future projects.
