KATHMANDU: Reconstruction of the Miteri Bridge at the Nepal–China northern border point of Rasuwagadhi has officially commenced, following severe flood damage in late June.
Construction of a Bailey bridge at Rasuwagadhi, the key transit point between Nepal and China, has begun with the aim of completion by Bhadra 30 (September 15), according to Chief District Officer Arjun Paudel. The temporary bridge is being built after the original Miteri Bridge—10 meters wide and 100 meters long—was severely damaged by an unprecedented flood in the Lhendekhola River on Asar 24 (July 8).
CDO Paudel said that the Chinese side has initiated the reconstruction in the first phase to restore cross-border movement and trade, which have been halted since the disaster. Ground-leveling work for the Bailey bridge is already underway.
The temporary bridge is being constructed two meters east of the original site to preserve nearby archaeological structures. According to officials, all necessary materials for the bridge have already arrived in Rasuwagadhi from China.
Using four excavators, engineers are working to divert uncontrolled floodwater back to its original course to stabilize the construction zone.
Paudel confirmed that the Chinese counterparts have committed to completing the Bailey bridge by *Bhadra 30*. Meanwhile, the construction of the integrated customs office at Rasuwagadhi remains on hold.
