Tribhuvan International Airport shut down indefinitely amid crisis

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s only international gateway, Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), has been closed indefinitely, throwing both domestic and international flights into complete uncertainty.

The airport authority announced on Tuesday that due to adverse circumstances, the facility will remain shut until further notice. An official statement clarified that the earlier plan to reopen the airport at 12 PM today has been cancelled, and no definite timeline for resumption has been set.

“Considering the unusual and critical situation, Tribhuvan International Airport will remain closed until another formal notice is issued,” the airport office said in its public notice.

The sudden suspension has left hundreds of passengers stranded in Kathmandu and across international destinations. Both domestic airlines and foreign carriers operating in Nepal have had to cancel or reschedule flights, creating widespread disruption in travel plans, business activities, and cargo movement.

TIA is Nepal’s only operational international airport and a critical hub for tourism, trade, and foreign investment. Industry insiders fear that an indefinite shutdown could severely impact Nepal’s tourism-dependent economy, remittance flow, and connectivity with the global market.

Airline operators have requested the government and the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) to clarify the situation and provide a timeline for reopening. Travel agencies in Kathmandu reported chaos among passengers seeking refunds, rebookings, or alternative routes through neighboring India.

The indefinite closure has also triggered global concerns, with international investors, development partners, and foreign embassies closely monitoring the situation. Nepal’s aviation sector, already under pressure from safety concerns and infrastructure limitations, faces a major setback that could affect its credibility in the region.

For now, authorities have urged passengers to stay updated through official announcements while discouraging reliance on unverified sources of information.
