KATHMANDU: Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Nepal’s only international gateway, has resumed operations after being closed due to ongoing unrest and adverse circumstances.
The decision to reopen the airport was made at a meeting of the Airport Security Committee on Wednesday. According to the committee, flight operations, including takeoffs and landings, resumed from 3:30 PM this afternoon.
Earlier in the morning, the Civil Aviation Office had issued a notice declaring that the airport would remain closed until further announcement, citing the nationwide curfew, prohibitory orders in Kathmandu Valley, and the challenging post-disruption environment as reasons for the suspension.
Airline operators welcomed the reopening, saying the decision has provided much-needed relief to stranded passengers and airlines alike. Hundreds of travelers had been affected as both domestic and international flights were grounded during the closure.
Tourism and aviation stakeholders also expressed hope that resumption of flights would help minimize immediate economic losses. With Nepal heavily dependent on air connectivity for tourism, trade, remittance inflows, and foreign investment, uninterrupted operations of TIA remain vital for the country’s fragile economy.
Authorities have requested passengers to stay in touch with airlines for updated schedules, as some delays and adjustments are still expected due to the backlog of flights.
