Thai Lion Air flight overshoots TIA runway, diverted to Lucknow after missed approach at Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: A Thai Lion Air aircraft arriving from Bangkok was diverted to Lucknow, India, after failing to land at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) due to a missed approach on Saturday afternoon, airport officials confirmed.

According to the Tribhuvan International Airport Office, the flight, bearing the number TLM 220, was unable to make a safe landing approach at Kathmandu and was consequently rerouted to Lucknow Airport as a precautionary measure.

“The aircraft could not land in Kathmandu due to a missed approach situation,” an airport official stated. “Such incidents occur when the pilot finds that the aircraft’s position, alignment, or other landing parameters are not within safe limits during final descent.”

The Thai Lion Air jet, which had departed from Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport, was scheduled to land in Kathmandu earlier in the day. However, due to the unstable approach and poor alignment with the runway, the pilot opted for a go-around, commonly known as an overshoot maneuver, to maintain flight safety.

A missed approach is a standard aviation safety procedure used when aircraft cannot complete a safe landing due to visibility issues, weather conditions, or other technical and operational factors.

Although the exact cause of the missed approach has not yet been disclosed, sources at TIA indicated that visibility fluctuations and shifting wind patterns around the airport’s hilly terrain may have contributed to the aborted landing attempt.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has stated that all passengers and crew members are safe, and there were no technical issues reported with the aircraft. After holding briefly in Kathmandu airspace, the flight was directed to Lucknow for refueling and further coordination.

Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, surrounded by hills and known for its challenging approach path, frequently experiences such diversions during adverse weather or limited visibility conditions.

The flight is expected to return to Kathmandu once weather and landing conditions improve, according to airport officials.
