Avalanche in Rolwaling’s Yalung Ri: Six rescued by helicopter, Search continues for missing climbers

KATHMANDU: Six climbers who were caught in an avalanche while attempting to summit Yalung Ri in the Rolwaling Himalayan region have been rescued by helicopter on Tuesday. According to police sources, the rescue operation was initiated immediately after reports of the avalanche reached local authorities and emergency response teams in Dolakha.

Among the rescued are Nepali climbers Lhakpa Tamang and Sun Bahadur Gurung, who sustained serious injuries. Both have been airlifted to HAMS Hospital in Kathmandu for emergency medical treatment.

Similarly, two foreign climbers injured in the incident were transported by helicopter to ERA International Hospital in Kathmandu. Their identities and nationalities have not yet been officially disclosed, as medical teams continue to assess their condition.

Police confirmed that others remain missing in the avalanche zone. Search and rescue teams, supported by additional high-altitude guides and another helicopter, are currently engaged in locating the missing climbers. However, challenging weather and unstable snow conditions in the Rolwaling Valley are affecting rescue efforts.

Local authorities, trekking agencies, and the Nepal Mountaineering community have expressed concern over increasing avalanche risks due to changing seasonal weather patterns in the Himalayas. According to experts, the Yalung Ri climb, though categorized as a technical peak, has seen rising activity from both domestic and international climbers in recent years.

Rescue operations remain ongoing, with officials stating that further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
