KATHMANDU: A “Road Repair Ambulance” has been launched in Kathmandu for the immediate maintenance of potholes on city roads, marking the first time such equipment has been used in Nepal.
The ‘Road Repair Ambulance’ was inaugurated on Thursday by Minister of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport, and Urban Development, Kul Man Ghising. The specialized vehicle, introduced by the Kathmandu Division Road Office, will be utilized for the quick repair of strategically important roads within the Kathmandu district, which fall under the office’s jurisdiction.
24/7 Readiness and Mobile App for ComplaintsTechnology Integration: A mobile application has also been introduced alongside the ambulance to allow citizens to instantly report potholes. The app enables users to upload photos of the damaged road surface immediately and facilitates tracking of repair updates post-maintenance.
Immediate Response: According to Subodh Kumar Devkota, Chief of the Kathmandu Division Road Office, the ambulance will ensure the team is on 24/7, 365-day standby to carry out quick repairs, thereby ensuring smooth and continuous traffic flow.
Trained Team: The ambulance is accompanied by a trained technical team that will promptly reach the reported site to complete the repair work efficiently. The vehicle is equipped with warning lights for traffic management, allowing emergency maintenance even during peak hours.
Plan to Expand to Other CitiesMinister Ghising stated at the launch event that the Road Ambulance is being used as a model project in Nepal and will be expanded to other major cities to address public grievances regarding road maintenance. He stressed the need to enhance road maintenance service delivery by installing modern equipment, similar to developed countries.
Keshav Kumar Sharma, Secretary of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, and Vijay Jaishi, Director General of the Department of Roads, expressed confidence that the use of the Road Ambulance would ensure immediate response to road maintenance complaints.
