KATHMANDU: The government has officially launched an online tourist tracking system to systematically record the stay and movement of foreign nationals visiting Nepal. The Foreign Nationals Management Information System came into force on January 1, 2026, making digital tracking mandatory.
The system was formally inaugurated by the Department of Immigration in the presence of Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal and Nepal Tourism Board Chief Executive Officer Deepak Raj Joshi, among other officials. Although the department had earlier announced plans to implement the system from September 17 (Ashoj 1), shifting domestic circumstances led authorities to enforce it compulsorily from January 1.
According to the Department of Immigration, the system will be implemented in two phases. In the first phase, it has been made mandatory for star-rated hotels within the Kathmandu Valley. In the second phase, beginning March 1, 2026 (Falgun 17, 2082 BS), the system will be extended nationwide and applied compulsorily to star hotels across the country, airline companies, tour and travel agencies, and money exchange operators.
The department has stated that the system will gradually be enforced across all types of hotels, guest houses, and services provided by both public and private institutions. All organizations providing services to foreign nationals have been urged to mandatorily register and integrate with the system developed by the department.
The Department of Immigration said the foreign national registration and monitoring (tracking) system has been developed to enhance the security of tourists, facilitate information management, help in crime prevention, and support tourism promotion in Nepal. Through its implementation, authorities expect more organized records of foreign nationals’ accommodation and activities within the country.
Officials believe the system will significantly improve search, rescue, and security operations during emergencies, while also strengthening information-sharing mechanisms among security agencies, tourism entrepreneurs, and other concerned stakeholders. The department maintains that the initiative will contribute to the safe, systematic, and sustainable development of Nepal’s tourism sector.
The Department of Immigration has also published detailed guidelines on its official website regarding the registration and onboarding process for institutions required to integrate with the system.
