KATHMANDU: The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) has announced preparations for Nepal’s second national economic census, aiming to capture a comprehensive snapshot of the country’s industries, businesses, and services. The census will run from Chaitra 1 to the end of Ashad under the theme: “Measuring the Economy through Economic Census.”
The CBS officially unveiled the census schedule, logo, and slogan on Monday, signaling the start of field-level preparations.
Nepal conducted its first economic census in Baisakh 2075, covering 923,356 establishments nationwide, involving 3.22 million individuals, and revealing that approximately 30 percent of managerial positions were held by women. The second census will expand on this, collecting data not only on establishments but also on production, services, and employment patterns.
For the upcoming exercise, 5,000 enumerators will be deployed across the country to gather detailed information from industries, businesses, cooperatives, public-private institutions, and service providers. Data collected will include the number and type of establishments, investment, employment, production outputs, and service flows. The survey will cover 18 key economic sectors, providing a comprehensive view of the nation’s economic landscape.
Kamal Prasad Pokhrel, Chief Statistician at CBS, emphasized the importance of the census for understanding economic activity: “This exercise will help identify the current status of economic units and provide the government with critical information for planning future policies. It will inform decisions on employment, inflation, workforce requirements, and economic opportunities.”
Deputy Chief Statistician Lamichhane added that the census will reveal sectoral contributions and growth rates, helping policymakers prioritize resources and attention to sectors that drive economic development.
The second economic census is expected to serve as a crucial tool for both evidence-based policy formulation and economic planning, providing a foundation for strategic decision-making across government and private sectors.
By systematically mapping the country’s industrial and service landscape, the CBS aims to create a comprehensive database that will guide investment, labor policies, and development strategies in the coming years.
