KATHMANDU: The government has moved swiftly to clamp down on online betting platforms, directing authorities to shut down all betting apps and related websites within 24 hours as part of its newly announced governance reform agenda.
The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology Nepal has issued a formal directive to the Nepal Telecommunications Authority to immediately block betting applications and associated online platforms operating in Nepal.
The move follows the Cabinet’s approval of the 100-point governance reform plan on Saturday, which explicitly includes a provision to ban betting apps and curb digital gambling activities.
Acting on the government’s instruction, the ministry communicated with the telecom regulator to enforce the shutdown. The Nepal Telecommunications Authority is now expected to direct all internet service providers (ISPs) to block access to betting websites and applications across the country.
Officials say the crackdown aims to control the growing influence of online gambling, which has raised concerns over financial risks, illegal transactions, and social impact, particularly among young users.
With the directive now in place, enforcement agencies and ISPs are preparing to implement the ban nationwide within the stipulated 24-hour timeframe.
