KATHMANDU: In a sweeping regulatory action aimed at strengthening digital governance and curbing illegal financial activities, Nepal has blocked more than 7,000 online betting applications and websites, marking one of the largest crackdowns on unauthorized digital platforms in the country.

The move was executed by the Nepal Telecommunications Authority in coordination with internet service providers (ISPs), following a recent government decision under its governance reform agenda.

According to Surya Prasad Lamichhane, the authority identified and shut down thousands of illegal URLs and apps involved in online gambling operations.

“More than 7,000 such URLs and applications have been blocked so far. In the past week alone, we received over 50 complaints through telephone, email, and messaging platforms regarding online betting. All of these concerns have been addressed, and कार्रवाई has been initiated accordingly,” Lamichhane stated.

Policy-Driven Enforcement Under Governance Reform

The crackdown follows a Cabinet decision taken on Chaitra 13 (late March 2026), which approved a 100-point governance reform action plan. Clause 42 of the directive specifically mandates the shutdown of online betting platforms within 24 hours of identification.

Acting on this provision, the telecom regulator moved swiftly to enforce compliance by instructing ISPs to block access to all identified betting-related digital platforms operating through electronic means.

Legal Framework and Penalties

Authorities have emphasized that online betting is strictly prohibited under Nepal’s legal framework. As per the National Penal Code 2017 Nepal, engaging in or facilitating betting activities is a criminal offense. Violators face confiscation of involved funds, imprisonment of up to one year, and fines of up to NPR 10,000.

Additionally, the Advertisement Regulation Act 2006 Nepal prohibits any form of advertising that promotes gambling or unauthorized lottery activities. Breaching this law carries similar penalties, including imprisonment and fines.

Rising Concerns Over Digital Gambling

The surge in complaints highlights growing public concern over the proliferation of illegal online betting platforms, which authorities say pose risks ranging from financial fraud to social harm.

Officials note that such platforms often operate without regulatory oversight, making users vulnerable to scams, data breaches, and untraceable financial transactions.

Government Warning and Public Advisory

The government has reiterated its strong warning against the use or operation of betting apps and websites, stating that strict legal action will be taken against offenders.

It has also urged the public to report any suspicious apps or websites to the concerned authorities, reinforcing a collaborative approach to tackling illegal digital activities.

This enforcement drive signals Nepal’s increasing focus on regulating the digital economy, enhancing cybersecurity, and aligning with global best practices in combating illicit online financial operations.
