KATHMANDU — A new high-capacity data center project named Bichuten Data World is set to come into operation within the next two months with an initial investment of around Rs 2.5 billion, aiming to position Nepal on the global information technology and digital infrastructure map.

The project, being developed with Nepali private sector investment, is being launched amid rapidly growing digital demand in Nepal and increasing future requirements for artificial intelligence (AI)-based infrastructure.

According to the company, Bichuten Data World will become Nepal’s first international-standard Tier 4-certified data center after completion. The project is expected to provide 99.99 percent uptime, ensuring uninterrupted operation of digital services and stored data throughout the year.

The company said the facility is being designed with advanced backup systems and high-level security infrastructure so that services remain operational even during technical failures or maintenance periods.

The data center is primarily being developed to support AI workloads, cloud computing and large-scale digital data management.

Explaining the origin of the project’s name, company chairman Naveen Agrawal said “Bichuten” is derived from a Japanese name associated with Lord Vishnu.

“Just as Lord Vishnu is considered the protector and preserver of the universe, this data center aims to securely protect Nepal’s critical digital data and strengthen the country’s data sovereignty,” Agrawal said.

According to the company, data centers are currently under construction at Chobhar and Birgunj.

The Chobhar facility will function as the primary data center, while the Birgunj site will serve as a disaster recovery center.

The project will initially begin operations with a capacity of 240 kilowatts, with plans to gradually expand to 5 megawatts by 2030.

Agrawal said construction work at the Chobhar facility is progressing rapidly and the company is targeting commercial operation by July.

He said the project aims to create opportunities for Nepali engineers and technical professionals within the country and help reduce the outflow of skilled manpower abroad.

The company also plans to utilize Nepal’s hydropower resources to operate the facility using clean and cost-effective energy.

Bichuten has also entered into strategic partnerships with global technology firms including Google Cloud and VVDN Technologies to expand AI-based technologies and digital services in Nepal.

According to the company, the project is expected to support digital transformation in sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture and government services.

The company has outlined a long-term roadmap to expand the facility’s total capacity to 5 megawatts by 2030.

“This is not just a building, it is a strong foundation for Digital Nepal,” Agrawal said.

The company believes successful implementation of the project could help Nepal emerge as a major regional data center hub in South Asia while contributing significantly to the country’s digital economy.

Bichuten Data Vault Pvt Ltd is the company behind the project.

The venture involves Nepali entrepreneurs including Naveen Agrawal, Meen Agrawal of Fair Group, Anuj Kyal of Kyal Group, Vishal Kumar Jatia and Sharad Goyal.
