KATHMANDU — Security personnel in Nepal’s Himalayan district of Mustang have seized a large consignment of Chinese electronic cigarettes (vapes) and arrested three individuals during a border operation in Upper Mustang, authorities said.

The operation was carried out on Friday night at Eklebhatti in Lomanthang Rural Municipality–4, where a joint security team intercepted 590 cartons of vapes being transported toward Kathmandu through the northern border route.

Lomanthang Rural Municipality in Mustang lies near Nepal’s northern frontier with China and serves as a sensitive transit point for cross-border goods movement.

Authorities said the seized consignment was being transported in two containers bearing registration numbers Na 6 Kha 4743 and Na 5 Kha 7921, which had reportedly entered Nepal via the Korala border point and were headed toward Kathmandu.

Those arrested have been identified as Santosh Lama, a resident of Dhunibesi Municipality–1 in Dhading, Phunchudorje Tamang of Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality–2 in Sindhupalchok, and Pasang Sherpa, a resident of the same municipality’s Ward No. 3.

The operation was jointly conducted by personnel from the Armed Police Force Border Out Post Nechung, Nepal Police, and the Mustang Customs Office.

In addition to the vape shipment, authorities recovered 259 cartons of shoes of different brands, eight sacks of socks, 15 sacks of garments, and approximately 15 kilograms of empty carton boxes used for packaging, according to officials.

According to Armed Police Force spokesperson Bishnu Prasad Bhatt, the arrested individuals have been handed over to police custody, while the confiscated goods were transferred to the Mustang Customs Office for further investigation and legal processing.

The seizure comes amid growing concerns over the illegal cross-border trade of vaping products, smuggling routes through Nepal-China border points, and the unregulated entry of electronic nicotine delivery systems into Nepal.

Authorities have intensified customs monitoring in northern border districts, particularly along routes linked to the Korala border crossing, amid increasing efforts to curb smuggling, customs evasion, and illegal imports.
