KATHMANDU: Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has introduced a new series of Rs 500 banknotes into circulation from today (Asar 3), bearing the signature of Governor Biswo Nath Paudel. The central bank said the new notes retain the same size, color, and overall design as the existing Rs 500 denomination while incorporating updated security features and the latest series identification.
According to NRB, the newly issued banknotes carry serial numbers ranging from झ३८ ०००००१ to ट८३ ९९९९९९. Under the numbering system, each alphabet series contains notes numbered from 000001 to 999999, resulting in the release of approximately 3 million new Rs 500 notes into the market.
The issuance marks the first Rs 500 banknote series carrying Governor Paudel’s signature since he assumed office. Previously, NRB had released 248,000 pieces of the 2020-series Rs 500 banknotes into circulation on December 24, 2021.
The central bank said the new banknotes have been printed using modern security technology to enhance protection against counterfeiting and improve public confidence in Nepal’s currency system.
On the front side of the note, the image of Mount Everest appears on the left, while a watermark of the national flower Laligurans (Rhododendron) is positioned on the right. The lower portion of the note features the inscription Series 2082, identifying the latest edition.
To assist visually impaired individuals, two raised black dots have been placed on the left side of the watermark area, allowing users to identify the denomination through touch.
Another notable security feature is an oval-shaped image of Kuber, located to the right of Mount Everest. The image changes color when viewed from different angles, providing an additional safeguard against forgery.
The note also incorporates a 3.5-millimeter-wide security thread that appears red when viewed directly and green when tilted. Such color-shifting elements are commonly used in modern banknote security systems worldwide.
On the reverse side, the banknote displays an image of a Royal Bengal Tiger (Pate Bagh) along with inscriptions in both Nepali and English. NRB said the combination of visual, tactile, and color-shifting security elements has been designed to strengthen the authenticity and durability of the currency.
The release of the new Rs 500 banknotes comes as Nepal continues efforts to modernize its currency management system, enhance security standards, and ensure a reliable supply of banknotes for the economy.
