KATHMANDU: The number of Nepali migrant workers seeking foreign employment decreased by over 47,000 in the last fiscal year 2082/83, marking a notable contraction compared to the previous year’s record outflow. According to data released by the Department of Foreign Employment, a total of 792,187 Nepalis received labor permits to work abroad in the fiscal year 2082/83.
Among those who migrated for work last year, 697,096 were men, while 95,091 were women. This cumulative figure represents a decrease of 47,079 individuals compared to the fiscal year 2081/82, during which the department issued labor permits to a staggering 839,266 workers.
The official statistics highlight a significant decline particularly in departures managed by manpower recruitment agencies. In the last fiscal year, manpower agencies sent 268,990 workers abroad. This is a sharp drop of 90,685 compared to the fiscal year 2081/82, when recruitment agencies successfully placed 359,675 individuals in overseas markets.
Conversely, independent channels and alternative pathways saw distinct participation. The department recorded that 128,520 individuals left for foreign employment after securing personal labor permits. In addition, government-to-government (G2G) initiatives facilitated the safe departure of 8,197 workers to various bilateral destination countries during the same period.
In terms of popular destinations, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) emerged as the top choice for Nepali workers in the last fiscal year. The Gulf nation drew 183,580 Nepalis, a figure that includes both fresh departures and workers renewing their labor permits.
Saudi Arabia followed as the second-largest destination, welcoming 123,719 Nepali migrants. Qatar and Malaysia also remained primary destinations, absorbing 121,230 and 128,753 workers respectively. Beyond the traditional Gulf countries and Malaysia, European and East Asian destinations continued to attract significant numbers. The department recorded that 43,360 Nepalis went to Kuwait, 33,360 migrated to Romania, and 22,266 individuals secured labor approvals for Japan.
