KATHMANDU: The government has introduced a new mechanism to address delays in public service delivery, corruption and irregularities in development and construction works at the local level, bringing such complaints under the direct monitoring of the Chief Secretary of the Government of Nepal.
The Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers (OPMCM) has issued a public notice stating that complaints related to local governments will now be addressed directly through the Chief Secretary.
The move comes amid growing public complaints regarding delays in public service delivery, irregularities in procurement and contract management, and alleged misconduct in development and construction projects carried out by local governments.
According to Hemraj Aryal, spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, complaints received through the government’s ‘Hello Sarkar’ portal and other grievance-handling mechanisms will be addressed effectively under the active supervision of the Chief Secretary.
The government believes the new mechanism will strengthen accountability at the local level and help ensure that citizens receive public services without unnecessary delays or administrative hurdles.
Citizens can lodge complaints regarding delays, negligence and irregularities at local governments through the government’s official grievance-handling portal, www.gunaso.opmcm.gov.np. Complaints can also be submitted through the 1111 hotline, mobile platforms or by scanning the designated QR code, according to the notice issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.
The government’s decision is expected to provide citizens with a more direct channel to report problems at local governments and increase oversight of local-level service delivery, public procurement and development projects.
