Supreme Court reinstates House of Representatives

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) today has reinstated the House of Representatives (HoR) that was dissolved by the President on recommendation of the Cabinet led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

On December 21, President Bidhya Devi Bhandari had dissolved the parliament.

At a hearing on writ petition filed by as many as 13 petitioners, the constitutional bench of Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher JBR, justices Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha, Anil Kumar Sinha, Sapna Pradhan Malla and Tej Bahadur KC today ruled that the dissolution of Parliament by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli will be annulled.

Citing that the Constitution does not allow the government to dissolve the parliament under present circumstances, the apex court ruled against the decision of the government. Moreover, the court also directed the government to call for meeting of the House of Representatives within 13 days.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Oli had called for meeting of National Security Council and the Cabinet.
