KATHMANDU: Nepali leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane has etched his name into international cricket history by breaking the long-standing record of Australian pacer Mitchell Starc to become the fastest bowler to claim 150 wickets in One Day International (ODI) cricket.

Lamichhane achieved the milestone after taking two wickets against Scotland national cricket team in an ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 match, reaching 150 ODI wickets in just 73 matches.

The previous record belonged to Starc, who had reached the landmark in 77 ODIs. Lamichhane’s achievement further cements his reputation as one of the most prolific wicket-taking bowlers in associate cricket.

The 25-year-old spinner already holds another major ODI record, having become the fastest player to reach 100 ODI wickets, accomplishing the feat in only 42 matches.

Lamichhane is also among the quickest bowlers to 50 ODI wickets. He reached the milestone in 22 matches, making him the second-fastest player in history to do so. The world record remains with Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis, who claimed 50 wickets in just 19 matches.

In 73 ODI appearances, he has now taken 151 wickets for Nepal while also contributing more than 500 runs with the bat. In the T20 International format, Lamichhane has claimed 136 wickets in 74 matches, underlining his status as one of Nepal’s most successful cricketers across formats.

The latest milestone comes as a major boost for Nepal cricket, highlighting the country’s growing prominence on the international stage and reinforcing Lamichhane’s standing among elite ODI bowlers globally.
