Mega infrastructure projects to be built under EPC model

KATHMANDU: The government is preparing to implement/adopt the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model of development in construction of all large infrastructure projects.

Recently, the government introduced a Directive on Procurement through EPC-2021 which envisions developing all large scale projects (tunnels, flyovers, bridges as well as airports, stadiums, auditoriums) in the EPC model.

Along with this, the model will be implemented across mega road projects and projects related to irrigation, drinking water, hydropower. As of now, the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has been following the EPC model. Similarly, Nepali Army has signed a contract to build tunnels and bridges along the Kathmandu-Terai Fast Track in the same model.

Sushil Dhakal, spokesperson of the PPMO, said that the directive has been implemented to maintain uniformity in procurement done through EPC.

EPC is a PPP model for the development of infrastructure projects especially highways. Under this model, the cost is completely borne by the government. Government invites bids for engineering knowledge from the private players.
