150,962 foreign tourists visited Nepal in 2021 despite Covid-19

KATHMANDU: Despite Covid-19, a total of 150,962 foreign tourists arrived in Nepal during 2021 against the arrival of 230,000 foreign tourists in 2020.

The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) informed that the tourist arrival in 2020 is 25 percent less than the number of tourist visiting Nepal through air and roadways in 2020. The decline in arrival of tourists is largely attributed to restrictions in movements of people in foreign countries and also at home due to the outbreak of the second wave of COVID-19 across the world.

The Board’s Director Mani Lamicchane shared that over 230,000 foreign tourists had visited Nepal in 2020 while 1.19 million tourists had arrived here in 2019.

Indian tourists constituted the highest number of foreign tourists with 64,673 visitors followed by 22,853 American tourists in 2021. Likewise, 8,680 British nationals, 6,196 Chinese and 5,044 Bangladeshi citizens had visited Nepal during the review period, according to NTB.
