Upper Karnali Project’s dispute moved to constitutional bench

KATHMANDU: The hearing on the dispute of the 900-megawatt Upper Karnali Hydropower Project has now been transferred to the constitutional bench.

Justice duos Kumar Regmi and Til Prasad Shrestha sent the dispute of Upper Karnali Hydropower Project to the constitutional bench citing concerns of constitutional interpretation.

Justices Regmi and Shrestha sent the case to the constitutional bench after hearing the petition of the government on scrapping of the interim order.

The government had extended a two year term to the Indian power developer GMR for financial closure for the Upper Karnali Project.

The local residents had lodged the writ petition at the Supreme Court by challenging the government decision to give two more years for financial closure for GMR.

Hearing the case, the SC had issued an interim order but the government had again filed a petition demanding to scrap the court’s interim order.
