KATHMANDU: The Morang Industry Association has called on the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) to take urgent action to resolve frequent power tripping disrupting industries in the Sunsari-Morang Industrial Corridor. Despite assurances of stable electricity supply during the monsoon season due to increased hydropower generation, industrialists are grappling with daily power outages, causing significant operational and financial losses.
Association President Nandakishor Rathi expressed frustration over the NEA’s focus on exporting electricity to India and Bangladesh while domestic industries face prolonged disruptions. “Frequent tripping damages machinery, wastes raw materials, idles workers, and forces reliance on costly generators, inflating production costs,” Rathi stated. He highlighted that despite repeated complaints to the NEA, no concrete measures have been implemented to address the issue. The corridor, home to over 500 industries contributing significantly to Nepal’s GDP, faces daily disruptions, undermining productivity and competitiveness.
Rathi noted that industrialists had high hopes for uninterrupted power during the monsoon, but persistent tripping has led to growing disillusionment. The dry season’s power shortages and monsoon’s tripping issues have caused substantial economic losses, with some industries reporting damages worth millions annually. The association has repeatedly submitted data on these losses to the NEA, yet no long-term solutions have been proposed.
Urging the NEA to act decisively, Rathi called for immediate steps to resolve tripping issues and proactive planning to prevent power shortages in the upcoming dry season. “Who will take responsibility for these losses?” he questioned, emphasizing the need for accountability and sustainable solutions. The NEA’s failure to address these concerns risks undermining Nepal’s industrial growth, particularly in the Sunsari-Morang corridor, a key economic hub.
