KATHMANDU — Rameshwar Shah, former vice president of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), has announced a major expansion of his hospitality investments with the launch of a new five-star hotel project in Janakpur under Mithila Hospitality.
Shah, who recently brought the Royal Tulip Chitwan Resort into operation in Chitwan, is now moving ahead with what is being described as the first international-standard five-star hotel project in Janakpur. The announcement has generated fresh optimism in Madhesh Province’s tourism and hospitality sector.
The new project was announced just eight months after the launch of the Royal Tulip resort in Chitwan, reflecting Shah’s growing investment focus in Nepal’s tourism and hotel industry.
The foundation stone laying ceremony for the hotel project was held on Baisakh 21 in the presence of Krishna Prasad Yadav, Chief Minister of Madhesh Province, as the chief guest.
The event was also attended by Industry, Commerce and Tourism Minister Kanish Patel, House of Representatives member Manish Jha, NRNA founding president Upendra Mahato, Manoj Shah and other local representatives, business leaders, intellectuals and journalists.
According to the developers, the project will involve a total investment of Rs 2 billion and is targeted for completion within three years. The hotel is expected to formally come into operation by Baisakh 2086 BS.
The hotel will be constructed on more than 2.5 bighas of land covering nearly 200,000 square feet, while the total built-up area will span around 120,000 square feet.
The property will feature 124 rooms, including eight luxury suites, with a total capacity of 372 beds.
Apart from Rameshwar Shah, the project will also include investments from former banker Gyanendra Prasad Dhungana, businessman Kaji Lama, Sudip Kumar Chaudhary and Udayakanta Jha.
Developers say the project is being designed not only as a hotel but as a complete tourism and hospitality destination.
The hotel will include high-end restaurants, live kitchens, café lounges, live music entertainment bars and a rooftop pool bar. Plans also include a casino, banquet and conference halls, business center, spa, health club, tennis court, multifunctional swimming pool and amphitheater.
Additional facilities such as EV charging stations and dedicated children’s play areas are also planned as part of the project.
According to the developers, the hotel is expected to directly create employment for around 150 people after operation, while also generating indirect employment and economic activity through local businesses and service providers.
The hotel will mainly target domestic and international tourists visiting Janaki Temple, visitors travelling along the Ramayana Circuit, wedding and religious event organizers, and business conference participants.
Janakpur, globally recognized as the birthplace of Goddess Sita, attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and tourists annually. Despite its major religious and cultural importance, the city has long lacked an international-standard luxury hotel.
With the new investment, developers and local stakeholders believe Janakpur and the broader Madhesh Province could gain stronger visibility on Nepal’s tourism map.
Once operational, Janakpur is also expected to become the first city in Madhesh Province to offer full-fledged five-star hospitality services.
