KATHMANDU: The total number of registered vehicles in Nepal has reached 6.24 million (62 lakh 49 thousand), according to the Economic Survey 2082/83 presented by Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Waglé in Parliament.

The data shows that motorcycles continue to dominate Nepal’s transport sector, accounting for more than 5 million units of the total registered vehicles.

Motorcycles Dominate Vehicle Fleet

Out of the total registered vehicles, over 50 lakh are motorcycles, highlighting the country’s heavy reliance on two-wheelers for daily transportation.

The trend reflects affordability, urban congestion, and limited public transport coverage, especially in urban and semi-urban areas.

Strong Vehicle Registration Growth This Year

The survey also shows continued growth in new vehicle registrations during the current fiscal year.

In just the first eight months (up to Falgun 2082), a total of 281,921 new vehicles were registered across the country, including:

  • Buses and minibuses
  • Trucks and cargo vehicles
  • Microbuses
  • Cars and jeeps
  • Motorcycles

This indicates sustained growth in transportation demand, driven by urbanization, trade, and mobility needs.

Smart Driving License Distribution

The Department of Transport Management has also expanded the distribution of smart driving licenses.

As of Falgun 2082:

  • 43,750 smart licenses were issued this fiscal year
  • A total of 4,114,181 smart driving licenses have been issued so far

This reflects ongoing efforts to digitize and modernize Nepal’s transport documentation system.

Growth in Embossed Number Plates

The rollout of embossed number plates has also progressed, although installation remains limited compared to production.

  • 87,014 embossed number plates produced (by Falgun 2082)
  • 88,340 plates installed in total so far
  • Only 5,186 plates installed during the current period

The slow installation rate indicates implementation challenges in transitioning to the new number plate system nationwide.

Transport Sector Expansion

The increasing number of vehicles highlights rapid expansion in Nepal’s transport sector, particularly in private mobility.

However, the dominance of motorcycles also points to ongoing challenges in public transportation infrastructure and urban traffic management.

With rising vehicle imports and registrations, Nepal’s transport system is expected to face increased pressure on road infrastructure, traffic management, and environmental sustainability.

Experts suggest that future policy focus will need to balance mobility demand with public transport expansion, emission control, and digital transport reforms.
