Chef Santosh Shah says dispute centers on $3,300 check, Not $1.65 million restaurant deal

KATHMANDU: Renowned Nepali chef and restaurateur Santosh Kumar Shah has clarified that the legal dispute leading to his recent detention is related to a bounced check worth NPR 450,000 (approximately USD 3,300) and not a NPR 225 million (USD 1.65 million) restaurant acquisition transaction, as widely portrayed on social media.

The chef, who gained international recognition through his appearance on the BBC television competition MasterChef: The Professionals, was briefly detained on Friday following a complaint filed by Shakuntala Adhikari Thapa. He was later released on a personal recognizance bond while police continue their investigation.

The case has drawn widespread public attention in Nepal and among the global Nepali diaspora, particularly after video clips related to the dispute went viral across social media platforms.

Shah Claims Business Dispute Has Been Misrepresented

Speaking publicly after his release, Shah said the controversy stems from a commercial transaction involving the acquisition of the “Shila Restaurant” property and not from a large-scale financial fraud allegation.

According to Shah, he had assumed responsibility not only for the restaurant purchase but also for existing rental disputes with the landlord and liabilities related to bank loans associated with the business.

He stated that payments linked to a previously issued NPR 2.5 million check had already been settled and that the current disagreement concerns only a remaining check worth NPR 450,000.

“This is fundamentally a dispute over a NPR 450,000 check. Business transactions involve payments and settlements all the time. What should have remained a routine commercial matter has been amplified far beyond reality through social media,” Shah said.

Viral Video Sparks Public Debate

The controversy intensified after short video clips circulated online showing a tense confrontation between Shah and another party involved in the dispute.

The celebrity chef argued that the footage was taken out of context and edited in a way that failed to represent the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

“People are judging my entire career based on a seven-second video clip,” Shah said. “Many appear to be sharing content simply to generate engagement and social media revenue. The reality is very different from what is being portrayed online.”

He further alleged that during a three-hour discussion between the parties, he was subjected to abusive behavior and was even spat on by an individual involved in the dispute.

According to Shah, only the brief moment showing his reaction was extracted and circulated publicly, creating what he described as a misleading narrative.

Concerns Raised Over Police Handling of the Case

Shah also expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which law enforcement authorities handled the matter.

He said discussions with police had been ongoing and that he was unexpectedly detained while traveling, despite his willingness to cooperate.

“We were continuously engaged in discussions with the police. Suddenly, officers stopped me on the road, took me into custody, and detained me. There was no proper inquiry or opportunity to explain my position before actions were taken,” he said.

The chef argued that decisions appeared to have been influenced by one-sided allegations, resulting in reputational damage before the facts of the case had been fully established.

Commitment to Nepal’s Hospitality Industry

Despite the legal controversy, Shah said he remains committed to investing in Nepal and contributing to the country’s hospitality, tourism, and food-service sectors.

Known for promoting Nepali cuisine internationally, Shah has become one of Nepal’s most recognizable culinary figures, helping introduce traditional Nepali flavors to global audiences through television appearances, international food events, and restaurant ventures.

“I am not tired of this challenge, and I am not running away from it,” Shah said. “I was born in this country. I left opportunities offering salaries worth millions because I wanted to return and contribute to Nepal. I will rise again and continue serving my country.”

Message to Global Nepali Investors

In a message directed at Nepalis living abroad and international investors considering opportunities in Nepal, Shah urged people not to view his case as a reflection of the country’s broader investment climate.

“I would like to sincerely request Nepalis living around the world to come back and invest in Nepal,” he said. “No one should be discouraged by my case. The investment environment in Nepal is gradually improving, and there are opportunities for those willing to contribute.”

His comments come at a time when Nepal is actively seeking greater foreign direct investment (FDI), diaspora investment, and private-sector participation in sectors including tourism, hospitality, food processing, technology, and infrastructure.
