DoTM enforces mandatory high-security embossed plates from October 17

KATHMANDU: In a major move towards digital and secure vehicle regulation, the Department of Transport Management (DoTM) has announced that all vehicle owners in Nepal must install high-security embossed number plates starting 1st Asoj, 2081 B.S. (corresponding to 17 October 2024 A.D.).

Issuing a formal notice on Tuesday, the DoTM stated that from the 1st of Asoj onward, vehicle registration, ownership transfer and annual renewal services will be provided only if the vehicle has an officially installed embossed number plate. The department has urged all vehicle owners to visit their concerned transport offices to install the secure embossed plates without delay.

The decision follows a resolution passed by the thematic committee meeting held on 20 Shrawan (04 August 2024), which finalised that the implementation of embossed number plates would be compulsory for all categories of vehicles from 1 Asoj.

Officials say that high-security embossed number plates are part of Nepal’s broader digital governance agenda and will help curb vehicle-related crimes, streamline traffic management and facilitate digital tracking.

With the deadline approaching, authorities have advised vehicle owners to comply on time to avoid penalties and service disruption.
