KATHMANDU, Feb 15 — Nepal is celebrating the holy Hindu festival of Maha Shivaratri today with nationwide prayers, rituals, and large gatherings of devotees, particularly at the revered Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu.
Maha Shivaratri, known as the “Great Night of Lord Shiva,” falls this year on Sunday, February 15 (Falgun 3, 2082 BS) and is observed as a national public holiday across the country.
From early morning, thousands of devotees, priests, and Hindu ascetics have begun arriving at the Pashupatinath temple complex, Nepal’s most important Shiva shrine, to offer prayers, perform rituals, and seek blessings. The temple remains the focal point of celebrations, drawing pilgrims from across Nepal and neighboring countries.
Authorities expect huge crowds throughout the day and night as worshippers observe fasting, chant mantras, light oil lamps, and participate in overnight vigils — traditional practices associated with the festival.
Maha Shivaratri is one of the most significant Hindu festivals in Nepal, symbolizing devotion to Lord Shiva and the triumph of spiritual awakening over ignorance and darkness.
In addition to religious ceremonies, the day is also marked in Nepal as Army Day, with special functions held by the Nepal Army. Celebrations include cultural activities, security arrangements around major temples, and public gatherings across the country.
Across Kathmandu Valley and other districts, Shiva temples are filled with worshippers, while bonfires, devotional singing, and offerings continue into the night, reflecting the deep cultural and spiritual importance of the festival in Nepali society.
