Balen Shah sworn in as Nepal’s 43rd Prime Minister, 14-member cabinet takes oath

KATHMANDU: Newly appointed Prime Minister Balendra Shah has taken the oath of office and secrecy in a special ceremony held at the Office of the President. President Ram Chandra Poudel administered the oath following Shah’s appointment earlier in the day under Article 76(1) of the Constitution.

The समारोह was attended by Vice President Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav, Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut, National Assembly Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal, former prime ministers, heads of constitutional bodies, senior government officials, security chiefs, and members of the diplomatic community.

In a notable cultural blend, the oath ceremony incorporated Vedic-Sanatan traditions, featuring conch shell sounds from seven shankhas, recitations by 108 Vedic students, and auspicious chants by 108 Buddhist monks.

Shah, a senior leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, was unanimously elected as parliamentary party leader on Thursday, becoming Nepal’s 43rd Prime Minister.

Alongside the Prime Minister, 14 ministers were sworn in. Shah will also oversee the Defence and Industry portfolios.

  • Pratibha Rawal – General Administration / Land, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation
  • Sita Wadi – Women, Children and Senior Citizens
  • Biraj Bhakta Shrestha – Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation
  • Nisha Mehta – Health and Population
  • Ganesh Poudel – Culture and Tourism
  • Bikram Timilsina – Communications and Information Technology
  • Dipak Shah – Labour, Employment and Social Security
  • Gita Chaudhary – Agriculture and Livestock

The formation of the new government marks a significant political shift, with a first-time parliamentarian assuming the country’s top executive role immediately after election.
