KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation has issued a directive mandating all airports across Nepal, including Tribhuvan International Airport, to significantly upgrade passenger services by introducing breastfeeding rooms, primary healthcare facilities, and free sanitary pad access.

The directive, released on Friday, underscores the government’s push to modernize Nepal’s aviation infrastructure and enhance passenger experience in line with global airport service standards. The ministry stated that the decision follows growing complaints and feedback from passengers and the public regarding inadequate facilities, cleanliness, and lack of human-friendly infrastructure at airports.

According to the notice, all airports must establish or upgrade clean, safe, and privacy-assured breastfeeding and baby care rooms. These spaces are intended to support nursing mothers and infants, ensuring dignity and comfort for traveling families.

In addition, airports have been instructed to set up primary healthcare or first aid rooms, specifically designed to assist sick passengers, senior citizens, and individuals with disabilities. The ministry emphasized that these facilities are essential for emergency response and inclusive service delivery.

A key highlight of the directive is the requirement to provide free sanitary pads in major airport restrooms, addressing emergency hygiene needs of female passengers. This move is seen as part of a broader effort to make Nepal’s aviation sector more gender-sensitive and inclusive.

The ministry noted that improvements in cleanliness, passenger services, and human-centric infrastructure are urgently needed across all domestic and international airports. It has instructed airport authorities to implement these changes promptly and ensure compliance.

This policy intervention aligns with Nepal’s broader tourism and aviation reform agenda, aimed at improving service quality, boosting traveler satisfaction, and strengthening the country’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination for international and domestic passengers.
