KATHMANDU: Nepal’s government arrears (beruju) have continued to rise, reaching Rs 88.09 billion, according to the 63rd Annual Audit Report published by the Office of the Auditor General on Friday.
The report shows that a total of 5,526 public entities were audited in fiscal year 2081/82, covering transactions worth Rs 9.48 trillion. Out of this, total irregularities amounting to Rs 88.09 billion were identified.
According to the Auditor General’s Office:
The report also states that arrears accumulated over previous years underwent settlement and adjustment worth Rs 66.11 billion, leaving cumulative updated arrears at Rs 7.55 trillion when including both old and new findings.
During the reporting period, Rs 14.63 billion was recovered through settlement of past irregularities and clearance of issues identified in the current year.
The Office of the Auditor General has also reported that audit work worth approximately Rs 147.89 billion could not be completed.
Presenting the 63rd annual report, the office said that audits of 179 entities and offices were left incomplete due to the political unrest on Bhadra 23 and 24, 2082 BS, during which official records and documents could not be submitted.
The report added that the inability of concerned institutions to provide necessary documents and records significantly affected the audit process, delaying verification of financial transactions worth the said amount.
