The body of ski mountaineer Hilary was sent to Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: The body of mountaineer Hilary Nelson, who went missing while skiing in Manaslu mountain, has been sent to Kathmandu. SP Kedar Khanal of District Police Office Gorkha informed that the dead body was sent to the teaching hospital in Kathmandu a little while ago from Samagaon by helicopter of Simric Air.

Nelson’s body was found near the summit of Mount Manaslu, police said. “We have brought the dead body to Samagaon and sent it to Kathmandu after finishing the preliminary work,” SP Khanal said.

While skiing on Monday, 49-year-old Nelson Manaslu slipped and fell about 50 meters from the peak of the mountain. Nelson’s body was found covered in snow, police said. The guides who came for the climb rescued the body.

Earlier, on Wednesday morning, the body of Hilary Nelson, the world-famous American ski mountaineer, who went missing in the Manaslu mountain, has been found. She had been missing since Monday while skiing in Manaslu.

DSP Lilaraj Lamichhane of District Police Office Gorkha informed Kantipur that Nelson’s body has been found and preparations are being made to bring it to Samagaon.

According to Jeevan Ghimire, Managing Director of Shangrila Nepal Treks Pvt Ltd in Kathmandu, Jim Morrison, who went skiing with him, managed to return to the base camp safely. Hilary was lost in Bhimthang towards Manang.

In 2018, North Face athlete Hilary skied with Morrison and descended from the peak of Mount Lhopse. He also holds the record of skiing down from the peaks of two mountains above 8000 meters.

Hilary, who was born in Seattle, USA, was listed as a brave athlete by National Geographic in 2018. In 2005, she skied from the peak of Choyu Himal.
