Government Hikes Customs Duties on Alcohol, Beer, Tobacco, and Cigarettes

KATHMANDU: The government of Nepal has announced an increase in taxes on alcohol, tobacco, and cigarette-related products in the budget for the fiscal year 2082/83 (2025/26). Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel, presenting the budget during a joint session of the Federal Parliament on Thursday at 3 PM, revealed that customs duties on imported liquor, beer, tobacco, and cigarettes have been raised to boost revenue.

In addition to the hike in customs duties, certain tariff rates have been adjusted. The existing excise duty rates have seen a modest increase, and the scope of the health risk tax has been expanded to cover a broader range of products.

These measures aim to enhance public health by discouraging the consumption of harmful goods while contributing to the government’s revenue targets, set at NPR 13.15 trillion for the upcoming fiscal year. The tax adjustments are part of the broader NPR 19.64 trillion budget, which focuses on economic growth, infrastructure development, and fiscal discipline.
