Cement and rebar prices slashed as demand dips in monsoon season

KATHMANDU: Cement and rebar manufacturers in Nepal have reduced prices in response to declining demand and improved production conditions, according to the Department of Commerce, Supply, and Consumer Protection. Cement prices have dropped by NPR 50 to NPR 100 per sack, while rebar prices have decreased by up to NPR 5 per kilogram.

The price reduction follows a decrease in demand during the monsoon season, when construction activities slow down significantly. Additionally, reduced load-shedding in industries has lowered production costs, enabling manufacturers to pass on savings to consumers. Previously, industries faced up to 12 hours of load-shedding, which had driven up production costs and cement prices.

Ravi Singh, President of the Federation of Nepalese Contractors, confirmed the price cuts, noting that Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) now costs between NPR 600 and NPR 700 per sack, down from NPR 675 to NPR 800. Similarly, rebar prices have fallen from NPR 96 per kilogram to NPR 82-85 per kilogram, reflecting a gradual decline.

Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC) prices have also decreased, ranging from NPR 550 to NPR 675 per sack.
The department’s Director General, Kumar Prasad Dahal, attributed the price drop to lower demand and reduced operational costs. As the monsoon ends and construction activities resume, prices for these materials are expected to rise again, following seasonal trends in the construction sector.
