KATHMANDU: Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has reissued its notice regarding the rules governing the bringing of foreign currency into Nepal and taking foreign currency out of the country, reiterating existing provisions on customs declarations and Indian currency transactions.
According to the notice, Nepali and foreign nationals can bring cash foreign currency into Nepal up to the equivalent of US$5,000 without making a customs declaration. For amounts exceeding the equivalent of US$5,000, travelers are required to declare the currency at customs and obtain certification.
The provision applies to Indian rupees as well. In the case of Indian currency, travelers can bring up to an amount equivalent to US$5,000 without a customs declaration. For other foreign currencies for which the exchange rate is not published by Nepal Rastra Bank, the same threshold of the equivalent of US$5,000 applies.
The central bank said the notice has been reissued under the authority provided by Section 12 of the Foreign Exchange (Regularization) Act, 2019 and in accordance with the provisions of Section 29(ka) of the Asset (Money Laundering) Prevention Act, 2064.
The notice also draws attention to the rules governing Indian currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000. According to a notice published in the Nepal Gazette on October 25, 2025, transactions involving Indian currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 that were in circulation before November 9, 2016, are prohibited.
However, Indian currency notes of Rs 200 and Rs 500 issued after November 9, 2016, can be carried, brought into or taken out of Nepal by Nepali or Indian citizens up to a limit of INR 25,000 per person, in accordance with prevailing regulations.
The central bank has also reiterated that Nepali citizens are not permitted to take Indian currency to countries other than India, nor are they allowed to bring Indian currency into Nepal from countries other than India.
Nepal Rastra Bank said an earlier notice published on May 24, 2025, on the same subject has been cancelled.
The latest notice has been issued by the Foreign Exchange Management Department of Nepal Rastra Bank.
