KATHMANDU: The board of Nepal Stock Exchange has decided to open share trading on Fridays, replacing the traditional Sunday-to-Thursday trading schedule, following the government’s move to declare Sunday as a public holiday.
With the new arrangement, NEPSE will now remain closed on Sundays and operate trading from Monday through Friday. Previously, the stock market remained shut on Fridays, with trading limited to five days from Sunday to Thursday.
NEPSE spokesperson Murahari Parajuli confirmed the decision, stating that the change aligns with the government’s revised public holiday policy.
“After the government declared Sunday as a public holiday, stock trading will also remain closed on that day. Therefore, we have decided to open trading on Fridays,” Parajuli said.
The government recently introduced the Sunday holiday policy with the objective of reducing petroleum consumption and easing pressure on fuel imports, a move expected to have broader implications across economic and administrative sectors.
Operational Shift in Capital Market
The decision marks a structural shift in Nepal’s capital market operations, affecting brokers, investors, and financial institutions that coordinate trading activities. Market participants will now need to adjust operational workflows, settlement cycles, and trading strategies in line with the revised schedule.
Despite the calendar reshuffle, NEPSE will continue to operate five trading days per week, maintaining overall market activity levels.
