KATHMANDU: The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index posted a double-digit gain on Friday, rising by 16.38 points to close at 2,758.49, as investor enthusiasm in hydropower stocks pushed overall market momentum higher.
The market saw strength across almost all sub-indices except trading, with the hydropower sector leading gains, rising by 1.29 percent.
Out of the total traded companies, share prices of 203 companies advanced, while 57 declined, indicating a broadly positive market sentiment.
Among individual stocks, Crest Micro Life Insurance stood out as the top gainer, surging 14.81 percent in a single trading session.
Trading activity also strengthened significantly. Total turnover increased to Rs 4.49 billion, up from Rs 3.89 billion in the previous trading session, reflecting higher investor participation.
The rise in volume suggests renewed confidence in select sectors, particularly hydropower, which attracted aggressive buying interest throughout the session.
Hydropower companies remained the focal point of market activity, with several firms recording heavy turnover.
Ankhu Khola Hydropower Company Limited recorded the highest turnover of Rs 439.5 million. It was followed by Ridi Power Company Limited with Rs 245.4 million, and National Hydro Power Company Limited with Rs 161.6 million.
All sub-indices except trading ended in positive territory. The hydropower index led sectoral gains, supported by strong demand from retail and institutional investors betting on long-term energy growth prospects in Nepal.
Market analysts note that hydropower stocks continue to attract liquidity due to expectations of strong project pipelines, policy support, and long-term domestic energy demand growth.
The recent uptick in NEPSE reflects a cautious but improving sentiment among investors, with liquidity flowing into selective growth sectors. However, analysts suggest that volatility may persist as investors continue to react to short-term profit booking and sector-specific developments.
