RSP Rabi lamichhane
KATHMANDU: Amid growing uncertainty in Nepal–India diplomatic relations, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane is set to visit New Delhi in the third week of Jestha (early June), according to party sources.
The visit comes at a time when several high-level diplomatic engagements between Nepal and India have been postponed or remain undecided, raising questions over the current state of bilateral ties.
An RSP official confirmed that a three-member delegation will travel to India, including Chair Lamichhane, Deputy General Secretary Bipin Acharya, and Secretariat member Deepak Bohara.
“The visit has been scheduled for Jestha 19 and 20,” the party leader said.
RSP Vice Leader Ganesh Parajuli said that while the travel dates have been confirmed, meetings and official programs are yet to be finalized.
“The dates are confirmed, but the official engagements and meeting schedules have not yet been fixed,” he said.
Sources suggest that during the visit, Lamichhane may meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, among other senior officials.
The visit is taking place against the backdrop of apparent diplomatic uncertainty between Kathmandu and New Delhi.
Recent developments, including the cancellation of Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s planned visit to Nepal and the lack of clarity over Nepal’s traditional first foreign visit by its newly elected prime minister, have contributed to speculation over the status of bilateral relations.
Additionally, the postponement of an international “Big Cat Alliance” conference in New Delhi—originally expected to host Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal—has further delayed potential diplomatic engagements between the two countries.
The conference was expected to include sideline meetings between Nepal and India’s foreign and commerce ministers, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.
Following Nepal’s recent elections, Indian Prime Minister Modi had personally called Lamichhane to congratulate him on his party’s strong electoral performance.
This upcoming visit marks the first foreign trip of an RSP delegation led by the party chair since the formation of the new government, making it politically significant in the context of Nepal–India relations.
Observers say the visit could help reopen informal diplomatic channels and ease current uncertainties, depending on the level of engagement secured during the trip.
