KATHMANDU: Nepali mixed martial arts (MMA) sensation Ravindra Dhant has advanced to the semifinals of Road to UFC Season 5, marking a historic milestone for Nepal in global combat sports and strengthening the country’s growing presence in international UFC, MMA, and combat fighting championships.
Competing at the prestigious Galaxy Arena in Macau on Thursday, Dhant secured a decisive victory over Filipino fighter Kimbert Alintozon in the bantamweight quarterfinal, becoming the first Nepali MMA fighter to win a bout in Road to UFC history.
The victory has elevated Dhant’s prospects of earning a coveted place in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the world’s premier mixed martial arts promotion, while also placing Nepal on the global map of professional combat sports.
Thousands of Nepali supporters reportedly turned up to cheer for Dhant, widely known as the “Tiger of Bajhang,” as he carried Nepal’s hopes in one of Asia’s most competitive UFC qualification tournaments.
Dhant’s progression to the semifinal represents a breakthrough moment for Nepal MMA, a sport that has gained increasing popularity among young Nepali athletes despite limited infrastructure and international exposure.
The Road to UFC tournament serves as a direct pathway for emerging fighters across Asia-Pacific to secure contracts with the UFC, making every bout highly competitive and career-defining.
Originally, Dhant was scheduled to face Matty Iann in the quarterfinal. However, after Iann suffered an injury, Filipino replacement fighter Kimbert Alintozon stepped in.
Dhant capitalized on the opportunity with a composed and dominant performance to seal his place in the next round.
In the semifinal, Dhant is set to face the winner between Japan’s Yonusuke Minami and New Zealand’s Kasib Murdoch, setting up another high-stakes battle in the Road to UFC Season 5 bracket.
Competing in the bantamweight division, Dhant remains in contention for an eventual UFC contract. If he emerges victorious in his weight category, the Nepali fighter could qualify for the UFC main stage, becoming one of the few South Asian athletes to break into the global MMA elite.
The achievement has sparked excitement among Nepal’s combat sports community, with many seeing Dhant as a key figure capable of transforming the country’s MMA ecosystem.
Dhant has emerged as one of Nepal’s most recognized MMA athletes in recent years through a string of dominant performances in regional promotions.
Last year, he made headlines after winning the title at Matrix Fight Night (MFN) 17 in Greater Noida, India, where he knocked out Indian fighter Chungren Koren in a standout championship performance.
That victory significantly raised his profile among MMA fans and positioned him as one of Nepal’s strongest prospects in professional fighting.
With his latest success in Road to UFC, Dhant is now one step closer to achieving what many Nepali fighters have long dreamed of — securing a place inside the UFC octagon and representing Nepal at the highest level of global mixed martial arts.
For Nepali sports fans, Dhant’s rise is being seen not only as an individual achievement but also as a landmark moment for the growth of Nepal sports, UFC Nepal, mixed martial arts in Nepal, combat sports Asia, and international MMA competition.
