Nepal’s Chatur Tamang sets Mount Elbrus record with 200th successful summit

KATHMANDU: Nepali mountain guide and mountaineer Chatur Tamang has achieved a remarkable milestone in international mountaineering by completing his 200th successful ascent of Mount Elbrus, Europe’s highest mountain, adding a new chapter to Nepal’s mountaineering legacy.

Tamang reached the 5,642-metre summit of Mount Elbrus at 6:20 a.m. local time in Russia on Saturday, July 25, marking his 200th successful ascent of the iconic European peak.

The achievement is being regarded as an extraordinary feat in the world of mountaineering, placing a Nepali climber at the centre of a remarkable high-altitude endurance record.

Tamang had been working toward the milestone through a series of successive climbs with international expedition teams. He completed his 198th ascent on July 22 with one international team before making his 199th successful ascent on July 23 with another team. He then reached the summit again on July 25 to complete his long-awaited 200th ascent of Mount Elbrus.

Nepal’s national flag reaches Elbrus summit

During his historic 200th ascent, Tamang carried and unfurled the Nepali national flag at the summit of Mount Elbrus, once again showcasing Nepal’s identity in the global mountaineering community.

He has made it a practice to carry the Nepali flag to the summit during his climbs, highlighting the contribution and growing international presence of Nepali mountaineers in global adventure tourism and mountaineering.

Born in Solukhumbu district, one of Nepal’s most prominent mountain regions, Tamang gradually developed his mountaineering skills before entering professional mountaineering in 1995.

He has been living in Russia since 2002, where he set himself the ambitious goal of climbing Mount Elbrus 200 times. After years of repeated ascents and guiding international expedition teams, he has now successfully achieved that target.

Connecting Nepal and Russia through mountaineering

Tamang currently divides his time between Nepal and Russia, contributing to the growing connection between the two countries’ mountaineering and adventure tourism industries.

In Nepal, he guides Russian climbers on expeditions to different Himalayan peaks, while in Russia, he guides international mountaineers attempting to summit Mount Elbrus.

His dual role has enabled him to promote Nepal’s Himalayan mountaineering opportunities among international climbers while also helping foreign mountaineers experience one of Europe’s most prominent high-altitude destinations.

Experience across Nepal’s major peaks

Mount Elbrus is not the only major peak Tamang has conquered. His mountaineering experience also includes successful ascents of some of Nepal’s most renowned mountains, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, Cho Oyu, Manaslu, Ama Dablam, Baruntse, Island Peak and Mera Peak.

His 200th successful ascent of Mount Elbrus stands as a significant personal achievement while also highlighting the global expertise of Nepali mountain guides, whose skills and experience continue to play a vital role in international mountaineering and adventure tourism.
