KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party lawmaker Yagya Mani Neupane has called for the public disclosure of judges’ assets, arguing that greater transparency is necessary to strengthen accountability within Nepal’s judiciary.

Speaking during a meeting of the House of Representatives’ Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee on Monday, Neupane urged the government to immediately make judges’ property details publicly accessible through official websites.

“The existing provision that keeps judges’ assets confidential lacks transparency,” Neupane said during the parliamentary discussion. “There should be an immediate arrangement to publish judges’ assets on websites. The assets of judges should also be investigated.”

The RSP lawmaker argued that transparency in financial disclosures is essential for improving public trust in the judicial system and enhancing accountability mechanisms.

Call for Local Courts to Reduce Supreme Court Burden

Neupane also raised concerns over delays and pressure in Nepal’s judicial system, emphasizing the need to operationalize provisions for local-level courts.

He noted that although constitutional arrangements exist for courts at the local level, the required legal framework has yet to be enacted.

“There is a provision for local courts, but we have not formulated the necessary laws for them,” Neupane said.

He proposed forming local courts and expanding the jurisdiction of district courts to help reduce the case burden currently faced by the judiciary, particularly the Supreme Court.

According to Neupane, strengthening lower judicial institutions could improve access to justice and expedite legal proceedings while easing pressure on higher courts.

The remarks come amid broader discussions on judicial reform, transparency, and institutional efficiency in Nepal’s justice system.
