KATHMANDU – The Government of Nepal has announced a major restructuring of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), dividing it into three separate companies as part of a broader energy sector reform and power sector modernization plan.

Presenting the national budget for fiscal year 2083/84 in Parliament, Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle said the long-delayed restructuring of the national power utility will be completed in the coming fiscal year.

According to the announcement, the Nepal Electricity Authority will be split into three distinct entities covering electricity generation, transmission and distribution, and electricity trading.

The government said the restructuring is aimed at improving efficiency, increasing transparency, and enhancing the overall performance of Nepal’s electricity sector. The reform is also expected to encourage competition and attract investment in the energy market.

Officials noted that separating core functions of NEA is intended to address operational bottlenecks that have persisted for years under a vertically integrated structure.

The restructuring is being positioned as a key component of Nepal’s energy sector reform strategy, which focuses on strengthening infrastructure, improving governance, and supporting long-term electricity market development.
