Fiscal Nepal

KATHMANDU – The Government of Nepal has announced a major policy shift in the taxation of electric vehicles (EVs), introducing a value-based customs duty system in the upcoming fiscal year budget.
Presenting the national budget for fiscal year 2083/84, Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle said that customs duties on electric vehicles will now be determined based on their market value rather than battery capacity.
Previously, EV imports in Nepal were taxed according to battery capacity, a system that had been in place for several years.
The government said the new valuation-based approach is aimed at making the taxation system more transparent, market-oriented, and aligned with international practices.
Officials believe the change will help streamline EV imports, reduce classification disputes, and improve revenue efficiency while supporting the growing adoption of electric mobility in Nepal.
