KATHMANDU: Global IME Bank Limited has introduced a new facility that allows Nepali citizens to open a personal savings account through the Nagarik App, in collaboration with the government’s digital public service platform.
The new service enables eligible Nepali citizens to initiate the account-opening process digitally using their National Identity Card (NID) details linked to the Nagarik App, making the process more convenient and reducing the need for manual data entry.
Under the new arrangement, Nepali citizens registered with the Nagarik App can scan a QR code available on Global IME Bank’s website and proceed with opening a personal savings account online.
The bank said the service, introduced for the first time in Nepal, is aimed at making banking services more accessible, simple and technology-friendly for the general public.
Citizens aged 18 years or above, who have obtained a National Identity Card and are registered with the Nagarik App, will be eligible to open an account online through the new facility.
As part of the process, the bank will obtain the customer’s required personal information securely through the Nagarik App after receiving the customer’s prior consent. This will eliminate the need for customers to repeatedly enter their personal details while opening an account and is also expected to strengthen data privacy and information security.
However, customers will need to complete the required verification process before fully operating the account opened through the Nagarik App. They can either visit their nearest Global IME Bank branch for verification or complete the process through video KYC (Know Your Customer).
The bank said the initiative marks an important step toward expanding secure, simple and reliable digital banking services by leveraging Nepal’s government-backed digital infrastructure.
Global IME Bank expects its collaboration with the Nagarik App to make the account-opening process more convenient, transparent and technology-driven while providing customers with a more modern banking experience.
The bank has been recognized nationally and internationally for its adoption of modern technology and customer-focused services. It has received the Bank of the Year 2014 and Best Internet Bank 2016 awards, as well as the Best Bank Nepal title consecutively in 2024, 2025 and 2026.
The bank has also received prestigious recognitions including the Euromoney Awards for Excellence in 2022, 2024 and 2025, Best Bank ESG Nepal 2024, and Best Employer, among others.
Global IME Bank is the first private-sector commercial bank in Nepal to establish a branch network across all 77 districts of the country. The bank currently operates 342 branch offices, 368 ATMs, 147 branchless banking outlets, 69 extension and revenue collection counters, and three foreign representative offices, providing services through more than 1,000 service points in total.
In addition to its domestic banking network, the bank has been contributing to Nepal’s economy by facilitating formal remittance inflows from countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE and India.
The introduction of account opening through the Nagarik App is expected to further accelerate the digital transformation of Nepal’s banking sector and provide citizens with a faster and more seamless entry point into formal banking services.
