KATHMANDU: The government led by Balen Shah has decided to recall six Nepali ambassadors stationed in key diplomatic missions abroad, signaling a major reshuffle in Nepal’s foreign service appointments.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the decision was endorsed by the Cabinet, and formal recall notices have been issued to the concerned envoys.
Six Envoys Recalled

Dr. Shankar Prasad Sharma – Ambassador to IndiaDr. Shiva Maya Tumbahamphe – Ambassador to South KoreaChitra Lekha Yadav – Ambassador to AustraliaDr. Purna Bahadur Nepali – Ambassador to Sri LankaSumnima Tuladhar – Ambassador to DenmarkKapil Shrestha – Ambassador to South AfricaPolitical Transition Drives Diplomatic Shift
All six ambassadors were appointed during the tenure of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Their recall is widely seen as part of the new administration’s effort to realign Nepal’s diplomatic representation with its current political leadership and policy priorities.
Officials indicated that the government is preparing to nominate new ambassadors to these countries in the coming weeks, although no names have been formally announced.
Strategic and Diplomatic Implications
The recall affects Nepal’s diplomatic presence in several strategically important countries, including India—Nepal’s largest trading partner—and South Korea, a major destination for Nepali migrant workers. Australia and Denmark also hold significance in terms of development cooperation and diaspora engagement.
Diplomatic observers note that such recalls are common during political transitions in Nepal, but they can temporarily disrupt bilateral engagements and delay ongoing diplomatic initiatives.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that the transition process will be managed to ensure continuity in diplomatic functions, with chargé d’affaires or interim arrangements expected to handle responsibilities until new appointments are finalized.
