Govt opens fair price shops in 49 locations today

KATHMANDU: With an aim to provide some respite to consumers during Dashain, Tihar and Chhath, the government has opened fair price shops in 49 different locations across the country from today.

The government has been opening such fair price shops during the festive season since the last few years so as to control the unnatural hike in the price of goods that usually occurs on such occasions.

The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies said it will be providing goods at discounted rates through mobile delivery services, depots, dealers and offices of the Food Management and Trading Company Limited and Salt Trading Corporation across the country.

Customers can also place orders for the goods that they require through the online portal.

The ministry has opened such shops in Kalimati, Koteshwor, Teku, Singha Durbar, Satungal, Thapathali, Nakhu, Prayag Pokhari, Jawalakhel and Bhaktapur in Kathmandu Valley.

Likewise, Salt Trading Corporation has opened fair price shops in Banepa, Birtamod, Biratnagar, Rajbiraj, Lahan and other cities outside Kathmandu Valley.

Similarly, Dairy Development Corporation will also be selling dairy products at affordable prices from all its offices and sales outlets.

With the launch of the fair price shops, customers can purchase salt at Rs 18 per kg, sugar at Rs 70 per kg and rice at five percent discount on each kg. However, each family is allowed to buy only 4 kg salt.
As per the ministry, the discounted service will be available till the Chhath festival.
