KATHMANDU – The Government of Nepal has announced plans to restructure the financially struggling Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) by converting it into a company and bringing in a strategic partner.

Presenting the national budget for fiscal year 2083/84 on Friday, Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle said the move aims to address the airline’s growing financial burden and operational inefficiencies.

The national flag carrier is currently burdened with nearly NPR 50 billion in debt, largely accumulated through aircraft procurement loans. Despite acquiring four large aircraft in recent years, the corporation has been struggling to service its debt, with interest payments further deepening its financial stress.

Officials said the restructuring is intended to improve corporate governance, enhance operational efficiency, and attract private sector expertise through strategic investment.
